Giant continued to grow throughout the 1970s and 1980s, opening stores in other major cities in the United States, as well as in Canada and Mexico. The merger was completed in 1999, and Giant became a subsidiary of the newly created Giant Food Stores, Inc. The new Giant Food Stores, Inc. became the largest grocery chain in the United States. In 2013, Giant announced plans to close 150 stores across the United States, primarily in the Midwest and South. The closures were completed in 2014.
